Effect of Size and Surface Charge of Gold Nanoparticles on their
Skin Permeability: A Molecular Dynamics Study

Molecular level understanding of permeation of nanoparticles through human skin establishes the basis for development of novel transdermal drug delivery systems and design and formulation of cosmetics. Recent experiments suggest that surface coated nano-sized gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) can penetrate the rat and human skin. However, the mechanisms by which these AuNPs penetrate are
not well understood. In this study, we have carried out coarse grained molecular dynamics simulations to explore the permeation of dodecanethiol coated neutral hydrophobic AuNPs of different sizes (2–5 nm) and surface charges (cationic and anionic) through the model skin lipid membrane. The results indicate that the neutral hydrophobic AuNPs disrupted the bilayer and entered in it with in ~200 ns, while charged AuNPs were adsorbed on the bilayer headgroup. The permeation free energy calculation revealed that at the head group of the bilayer, a very small barrier existed for neutral hydrophobic AuNP while a free energy minimum was observed for charged AuNPs. The permeability was maximum for neutral 2 nm gold nanoparticle (AuNP) and minimum for 3 nm cationic AuNP. The obtained results are aligned with recent experimental findings. This study would be helpful in designing customized nanoparticles for cosmetic and transdermal drug delivery application.

인간의 피부를 통해 나노 입자가 투과되는 과정을 분자 수준으로 이해하는 것은 새로운 약물 전달 시스템을 디자인하고, 또한 화장품 제제의 개발을 위한 기초 이론이 된다. 최근의 실험은 표면 코팅 된 나노 크기의 금 나노 입자 (AuNPs)가 쥐와 인간의 피부에 침투할 수 있다는 것을 제시한다. 그러나 이러한 AuNP의 침투 메커니즘에 대한 이해는 부족하다. 본 연구는 분자 동역학 시뮬레이션에 다른 크기(2-5 ㎚) 및 피부 지질막을 통한 AuNP의 투과에 대해 알아볼 것이다. AuNP는 피부에 흡착되어 200 ns이내에 투과되었다. 투과성이 가장 좋았던 것은 중성 AuNP 2 nm 였고, 가장 나빴던 것은 3nm의 양성 나노입자였다. 얻어진 결과는 최근의 실험 결과와 일치한다. 이 연구는 화장품 및 피부 약물 전달에 응용할 수 있는 나노 입자 설계에 도움이 될 것이다.

Sound Bite and Image Bite News
in France, Germany, Great Britain,
and the United States

This study offers the first systematic analysis of sound bites and image bites across countries and across time. It goes beyond traditional sound bite research by extending the scope of analysis also to visuals and by analyzing both sound and image bites not only with regard to their length but also with regard to their content and editorial packaging. Based on these findings, contours of three different political news cultures emerge: a strongly interventionist U.S. American approach, a moderately interventionist Anglo-German approach, and a noninterventionist French approach. Adopting an explicitly cross-national comparative perspective, the study introduces a theoretical model that explains sound bite news in divergent media systems and links it to the concept of media culture. It derives seven hypotheses from the model and tests them on three levels of analysis—organizational, national, and transnational. Despite a growing transnational convergence, multivariate data analysis shows evidence of the enduring importance that national parameters continue to exert. Conclusions for comparative political communication research are drawn.
